19th Annual Berkeley Undergraduate Prize For Architectural Design Excellence 2017.

An essay contest in three stages, open to all current full-time registered students in an undergraduate architecture degree program, undergraduates majoring in architecture, or diploma students in accredited schools of architecture worldwide.25,000usd purse.

The Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Design Excellence endowment was established in the Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley College of Environmental Design to promote the investigation of architecture as a social art. Each year, the PRIZE Committee selects a topic important to the understanding of the interaction of people and the built world that becomes the focus of the Essay Competition.

The Committee poses a Question on this website related to the topic.

Topic: Architecture Reveals Communities.

Organizer: Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley College of Environmental Design

Prizes: There is a total prize of 25,000USD, minimum 5,750USD first prize. The remaining purse is to be allocated at the discretion of the Jury.

Deadline: November 1, 2016

Guidelines: Students enrolled in any accredited undergraduate architecture program or diploma in architecture program throughout the world, are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal in English responding to the Question (see eligibility requirements). Undergraduate architecture students may team up with undergraduates from allied arts and social sciences programs.

From the pool of essay proposals received, approximately 25 are selected by the PRIZE Committee as particularly promising. The selected individual students, or student teams, become Semifinalists.

These Semifinalists are invited to submit a 2,500-word essay, again in English, expanding on their proposals. A group of readers, composed of Committee members and invited colleagues, selects five-to-eight of the best essays and sends these Finalist essays to a jury of international academics and architects to select the winners.
At the conclusion of the Essay Competition submittals, all Semifinalists are also invited to submit for a BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellowship. Details for the Fellowship will be announced in the spring 2017. Past Travel Fellowship Competition requirements, winning submissions, and follow-up reports by the winners are available to read here on the website.

Steps to Enter
Meet the Eligibility Requirements.
  • Write a 500-word proposal for an essay on this year’s Essay Question, as posted.
  • Provide one photograph each of your chosen projects.
  • Submit the essay and photographs online.
  • The competition is open to all current full-time registered students in an undergraduate architecture degree program or undergraduates majoring in architecture in accredited schools of architecture worldwide. Diploma in Architecture students who have not yet completed their Diploma are also eligible.
  • Essays must be submitted in English.
  • Finalists will be required to provide proof of current registration in the form of copies of actual school transcripts. You are still eligible to compete if you were an undergraduate student on September 15, 2016, but graduate before the awards are scheduled to be given.
  • Two students (maximum) who meet the eligibility requirements above may collaborate as authors. An architecture student may team up with another undergraduate in architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, arts and humanities, the social sciences, or engineering. If two students collaborate, then both names must appear on their essay and if awarded a prize, the prize is to be equally shared.
You are asked to include digital photographs of your selected building(s) or place(s) with your essay. The photographs should be at a minimum 500 pixels wide, and in .jpg format. No more than three photographs will be accepted. You can use a digital camera, a film camera (and scan the printed image), or capture the image on a cell phone. The photographs should be as informative as possible in order to enable those reading the essays to determine how well you have described your subject matter. The Readers are instructed NOT to add or detract points from their evaluation because of the quality of the photograph itself. To the contrary, one of the primary purposes of the essay format is to test your skill in describing a place or building in words, rather than pictures or drawings. As with the Readers, use the photographs to continually review how good a job you have done in describing your selected building(s) or places in words.

Judging for the essay competition is on a numeric system. The members of the BERKELEY PRIZE Committee are asked to evaluate each essay in terms of the following criteria:
  • Does the Proposal address the Question?
  • How creative, or creatively developed, is the Proposal?
  • Would the Proposal be clear to a broad audience?
  • How does the Proposal rank in terms of writing style?
  • How socially significant is the Proposal?
  • What is the potential for developing this Proposal into a strong essay?
  • Each Proposal is given a score of 1 to 5 (5 being the highest). The top approximately 25 scoring Proposals become Semifinalists.

  • Scholarships are promoted and advertised through Windle Trust offices in South Sudan and Sudan, and our affiliated Windle Trusts in Uganda and Kenya.

  • Candidates are interviewed.  Those short-listed for interview are advised to start arranging the process of taking the English language test (IELTS) and score at least 6.5 and not less than 6.0 in all components, as this is a usual admission requirement of UK Universities.
  • Interview reports, together with the application forms and supporting documents, are assessed by a final selection committee to decide which candidates should be placed on the “priority list” of selected students for placement on scholarships in the UK.
  • Once a candidate is selected and on the Priority List, UK programme staff work intensively with the candidate and the universities to seek the most appropriate course of study. The priority list is a pool of potential candidates for placement and has more candidates than places available in any one year (Usually, over 80 selected applicants). Candidates who cannot be placed in available scholarship schemes, for one reason or another, remain on the priority list for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Confirmation of the scholarship is given as early as possible, in order to give the candidate time to apply for a visa and prepare for travel to the UK.
How to apply:
  • There is no application fee.
  • Submitting an Application Form does not in any way guarantee you an offer of a scholarship award.
  • Please read the application details carefully before applying to Windle Trust

2017 Traineeship at the European Commission (Travel, €1,120 Monthly)

Apply for a paid traineeship of 5 months with the European Commission (or some executive bodies and agencies of the European Institutions like, for instance, the European External Action Service or Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation), starting on either 1st March or 1st October.

Application Deadline: 31st August 2016

To be taken at (country): Any allocated country in Europe within the EU

Eligible Field of Study: None. Interested candidate can only apply for one type of traineeship at a time – administrative or translation.

About the Award: A traineeship at the European Commission is much more than just a professional experience. Each batch of trainees organises a huge range of non-formal learning, social activities, from football to wine-tasting and much in between – in true bureaucratic fashion, each with its own organising committee. There are usually 40-50 of such activities to choose from.
The main social committee is the Trainees’ Committee, which organises parties and social events in Brussels and Luxembourg. Among the most popular events are the Job Fair, which is meant to help you work out your next steps in your professional life, and the prestigious Euroball.

Eligibility: The traineeship programme is open to university graduates, from all over the world who have a:
  1. Degree of at least 3 years of study (minimum a Bachelor);
  2. Very good knowledge of English or French or German (C1/C2 level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
  3. Very good knowledge of a second EU official language (required for nationals of EU countries).
Candidate must have completed at least 3-years of study with a degree to apply for a Blue Book traineeship. Only if you have a certificate or an official confirmation from your university that you have at least a 3-year degree will you be eligible to apply.
Candidate can apply once per session but as many times as you want until you are finally selected. If you do not pass the pre-selection, or you are in the Blue Book but not selected for a traineeship, you will have to submit again your application. It will undergo again the pre-selection with no guarantee that you will successfully pass it and be in the Blue Book again.

Selection Criteria: Candidates are anonymously evaluated in the assessment phase by two different evaluators, on the basis of following criteria:
  • Level of education (a full university degree of at least three years of studies is mandatory);
  • Language level in one of the three European Commission working/procedural languages (English, French, German) other than your mother tongue/s (mandatory);
  • Language level in the remaining European official languages and/or non EU-languages, if applicable;
  • Relevance of work experience, if applicable;
  • International profile – experience of living/working abroad (mobility);
  • Motivation and quality of reasoning;
  • IT Skills, organisational skills, publications and rare domains of study.
If they successfully pass the first phase of the pre-selection, candidates are “pre-identified” and admitted to the second phase of the pre-selection, i.e. verification of supporting documents/eligibility check.
For the level of education, candidates can send:
  • the certificate/s with the final grade/s clearly mentioned;
  • the Europass Diploma Supplement, if available;
  • university transcripts.
Up to three relevant work experiences can be mentioned in the application. Only work experience that is related to the profile that is selected and lasted, uninterruptedly, more than 6 weeks should be declared. Traineeships made during university courses are already assessed as part of the education and shall not be mentioned as work experiences.

Value of Traineeship:
  • You will receive a monthly grant of approximately €1,120 and reimbursement of travel expenses. Accident and health insurance can also be provided.
  • Every year, there are about 1,300 places available.
  • hands-on experience in an international and multicultural environment. This can be an important enrichment for your further career.
  • Visa costs and related medical fees may be reimbursed together with the travel expenditures.
Duration of Traineeship: March 2017-July 2017
