National Essay Competition on the Next System.
The Next System Project is pleased to announce our national essay competition on the next system. Judged by a panel (to be announced) of highly respected scholars associated with the project, we will award three $5,000 first prizes for the best original essays by an undergraduate, a graduate, and a non-student. Three runner-up prizes of $500 will also be awarded. We aim to publish a compilation of the best essays submitted.
The current system is failing all around us. The economy is stagnating. The political system is stalemated. Communities are in decay. The lives of millions are compromised by economic and social pain. Violence is endemic among individuals, communities, and nations. Civil liberties are eroding. Near-record numbers of citizens remain incarcerated. Underemployment, inequality, and ecological despoliation deepen day by day. The planet itself is threatened by climate change. A generation of young people expects to be worse off than their parents. The very idea of building a cooperative community of caring responsibility has faded from public discourse and common understanding. It’s time to talk about what’s next. It’s time to talk about the next system.
Topic
“But if you don’t like the present system … what’s your alternative?”
The time has come to think boldly about what is required to deal with the systemic difficulties we are facing. It is time to begin a real conversation about genuine alternatives. It is time to develop thoughtful, system-building answers to system-threatening challenges. It is time to debate what it will really take to move in a new direction capable of producing sustainable, lasting and more democratic social, economic, and ecological outcomes.
To this end, we are launching a national essay competition on the next system. We’re throwing open the debate to a wide range of contributors willing to do the hard work of moving beyond critique to proposing solutions in the form of comprehensive alternative political-economic system models and approaches that are different in fundamental ways from the failed systems of the past and present. Such visions might include not only core economic institutions but also – as far as is possible – political structure, cultural dimensions, transition pathways, and so forth.
An indication of what we mean by systemic alternatives can be found in the contributions to our ongoing series “New Systems: Possibilities and Proposals.” A preliminary list of questions that might be involved in alternative systemic design can be found in the comparative framework we developed to guide that series. But we don’t want to be overly prescriptive about the form or content of these essays. Beyond these suggestions, it’s up to you.

Enter For The Fountain Essay Contest 2016. USD 1,000
“In the context of this current moment in history, The 2016 Fountain Essay Contest invites you to consider the issues facing today’s immigrants. Are you an immigrant, too? Were your parents or grandparents immigrants? Are we all immigrants in this world? How do immigrants contribute to your society? How do they cause problems in your society? How would you help immigrants thrive?”
Application Deadline: 30th November, 2016. Winners to be announced 30th March, 2017
Offered annually? Yes
Eligible Countries: Contest open to all writers worldwide
About the Award: We all move. As Einstein said, “Nothing happens until something moves.” Movement is one of the essentials of the physical world.
This movement is a good thing, at least as far as our health is concerned. Moving exercises our muscles, strengthens our heart, and clears our head. Yet, movement is not just a physical activity. For some of us, moving signifies changing almost everything in our lives: changing neighborhoods or cities, enrolling in a college or finding a new job overseas.
For some, movement is an overwhelming ordeal. Not all of us choose to move. Some are forced from their homes against their will. There are more refugees now than at any point in human history. According to the United Nations refugee agency there are more than 65 million people who have had to leave their homes – either as refugees, asylum seekers, or to be displaced in their own countries.
Immigration, whether for a career change or to flee a conflict, is an enormous challenge for both the immigrant and the host country. Both are faced with questions of assimilation, integration, xenophobia, employment, security, education, etc. There are no simple answers to these questions, and both immigrant and host have legitimate concerns.

- Candidates are interviewed. Those short-listed for interview are advised to start arranging the process of taking the English language test (IELTS) and score at least 6.5 and not less than 6.0 in all components, as this is a usual admission requirement of UK Universities.
- Interview reports, together with the application forms and supporting documents, are assessed by a final selection committee to decide which candidates should be placed on the “priority list” of selected students for placement on scholarships in the UK.
- Once a candidate is selected and on the Priority List, UK programme staff work intensively with the candidate and the universities to seek the most appropriate course of study. The priority list is a pool of potential candidates for placement and has more candidates than places available in any one year (Usually, over 80 selected applicants). Candidates who cannot be placed in available scholarship schemes, for one reason or another, remain on the priority list for a maximum of 3 years.
- Confirmation of the scholarship is given as early as possible, in order to give the candidate time to apply for a visa and prepare for travel to the UK.
How to apply:
- There is no application fee.
- Submitting an Application Form does not in any way guarantee you an offer of a scholarship award.
- Please read the application details carefully before applying to Windle Trust
